Jess Ciampa trained at NSW Conservatorium of Music 1983-’86, with a Bachelor of Music Education. Jess majored on Trumpet but changed to Orchestral Percussion in the 3rd year. Jess is a Multi Instrumentalist who has played and recorded in a wide variety of styles. Has played and /or toured and/or recorded with:
Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Chamber Orchestra (recording and touring), The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra (recording-2010 ARIA award for “Tapas”, touring and featured percussionist with guests from L’Arppegiata-2007 and 2010, and Marco Beasley-2011), Sydney Philharmonia, Gondwanna Voices (recording 2008), Cantillation (recording 2008) The Seymour Group, Synergy Percussion, Bolshoi Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Sydney Dance Company (Including performances of “Salome” at the Cervantino Festival in Mexico). Percussion in the Sydney Lyric Orchestra, backing Jose Carreras in January, 2008. ABC recording with Teddy Tahu Rhodes and David Hobson in November, 2008. ABC recording with Sara Macliver in 2010. Featured Percussionist for the Sydney season of The Lion King in 2003/04 and 2013/14. Kit and percussion for the Sydney Theatre Production”Summer Rain”. Kit and percussion for Sydney season of “Jerry Springer:The Opera”. Dep for the Sydney seasons of Miss Saigon, Secret Garden, Fame, Oh, What A Night. 2008 season of “Bubble” at the Studio, Opera House with the Legs on the Wall company.
Plays drums/percussion with the Bernie Hayes Quartet, Dog Trumpet, Monsieur Camembert. Percussion on The Whitlams CD, “Love This City” Percussion on the Ian Moss CD, “Let’s All Get Together” and national tour/live gigs 2006/07 (playing Percussion and Electric Bass). Percussion on most recent Jeff Duff CD “Lost In The Stars” (and live gigs) Percussion on most recent Blind Man’s Holiday recording (and live gigs) Has played and/or recorded with Don Burrows, Dale Barlow, Gary Daley, Lily Dior, Deborah Conway, Daryl Aberhart, The Catholics, The John Foreman Quartet, The Field, Marsala, Tania Bowra, Margaret Urlich, Wendy Mathews, Abby Dobson, Kamahl, Paul Capsis, Tim Draxl, Virna Sanzoni, Dan Barnett, Tango Saloon, Darth Vegas, The Stiff Gins (recording) and The Urban Gypsies. Percussionist for the 2009 and 2010 Premier’s Gala Concerts at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Performed as a guest of Synergy percussion with world music legends Hossam Ramzy and Omar Faruk Tekbilek. Soundtrack recordings include “Happy Feet”, “Knowing”, “Walking with Dinosaurs”, Baz Luhrman’s “Australia”, “Legend Of The Guardians”, “Morgan’s Run” and “Happy Feet II”. Has played Timpani on several episodes of Australian Idol as well as recording and touring nationally with ex-Idol contestant, Bobby Flynn. Played Percussion for Tina Arena performances in the Opera House Concert Hall, 2008 and national tour March, 2009 as well as 2010 CD/DVD release “Tina Arena Live-The Onstage Collection” recorded/filmed in Hamer Hall, Melbourne.
Salsation (Trumpet then Bass Guitar), Batuka (Timbales) and Saraguey (Timbales) Depped with Saoco (Bass), Candela (Timbales), Barrio Salsa (Bass and Timbales), Matanza (Congas/Timbales), Salsa Rica (Timbales), Espirito (Congas/Timbales) and Mano a Mano (Timbales). Currently a member of Salsa big band Mucho Mambo (Timbales) including performance on CD releases, “Live at The Basement” and “Moorish”. Was involved as a musician for the Flying Fruit Fly Circus for many years, including festivals and seasons in Sydney (including a season as part of the Olympics Arts Festival in 2000), Melbourne, New Zealand, Vancouver (Children’s Festival) and 6 weeks in 1999/2000 at The New Victory Theatre on 42nd St, Broadway, New York. Extensive touring over three years as a member of the Spaghetti Western Orchestra. A Melbourne group who perform highly stylized interpretations of the film scores of Ennio Morricone. Work with them has included a 9 week European tour in 2009 (Holland, Belgium, France, Italy and London, including an appearance on “Later With Jules”), concerts as part of the Macau Arts Festival in May 2010 and a 6 week European tour in Oct/Nov 2010 (London, Finland and France). Performance for The Proms, Royal Albert Hall, London in August, 2011….to an audience of 4,000 and broadcast on BBC Radio and TV. Returning for a season at South Bank, London in January, 2012, and a tour of the UK and Ireland in Feb/March 2012. A week at the Carre Theatre in Amsterdam and more UK dates in May 2012. Day job for the last twenty four years has been performing in schools around Australia and in Singapore for Musica Viva with four different groups: Southern Crossings, B’tutta (still performing), Imbosima and Zeeko (still performing). Southern Crossings also toured extensively for Musica Viva overseas, including performances at numerous festivals in Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, India, Hawaii, Jamaica, Mexico, Hong Kong, Thailand, New York and Italy.
